Situated in Santiago's Macul district of the Maipo valley, the Cousino family estate dates back to 1856. It is the oldest winery in Chile and was originally founded by Matias Cousiño. The Cousiño's continue to select and propagate their own vines by the French technique of "selection massale", ensuring only the best vines are sustained. The distinguishing feature of the Maipo valley is its unique climatic conditions. Its proximity to the towering Andes provides a cooling effect in the evening which enables grapes to retain high natural fruit acid levels right up to the harvest, while the fluctuations from daytime to night time temperatures promotes an excellent aroma development and optimal ripening conditions. Today, in the hands of the 6th Generation, the Cousiño family is at the forefront of Chile's wine industry. In the words of Arturo Cousiño, President, "We are committed to creating world-class wines that are, at the same time, authentically Chilean."
