Dominated by the Alps, Piedmont is situated in North-West Italy. Renowned for its red wine, most notably Barolo made solely from the Nebbiolo grape and aged for long periods in oak. Gavi is the best white, made from the Cortese grape - it has good acidity and is very dry with a steely, lime character.
